New data reveals luckiest suburbs to get a winning lotto ticket

The chances of winning the lottery are unlikely, but one state had more winners than any other state or territory in Australia in the last financial year.

Victoria had the most division one winners in the country, with 138 in total, according to data from The Lott.

NSW had 91 lotto wins worth more than $452 million between July 1 last year and June 30 this year.

Eleven postcodes across NSW sold multiple division one wins including Denman in the Upper Hunter region and Worrigee/St Georges Basin in the Shoalhaven region.

Woden had the biggest division one win in the Australian Capital Territory.

Noarlunga Centre had the biggest division one win in South Australia.

Tasmania had three suburbs with multiple division one wins including Mowbray, Beaconsfield and Sorell.

Alice Springs sold the biggest prize for the Northern Territory.

Over in Western Australia, the communities of Australind and Morley sold three division one wins respectively.

The Lott spokesperson Matt Hart said some postcodes sold multiple division one winning entries.

“Melbourne CBD and Cairns are often up there with the division one wins,” Hart said.

“The biggest win of the year was an $80 million powerball prize.

“That was won by an Altona man in Victoria in February.

“You may have noticed last financial year we didn’t really see the big jackpots because the jackpots kept getting won, so instead we had quite a series of winners.”

The chances of winning a division one prize are unlikely.

You are more likely to be killed by a kangaroo or be struck by lightning than you are to win division one in some of the games.

The Lott estimates that the chances of someone winning a division one in Powerball are a whopping one in 134 million.

You are about 16.7 times more likely to be killed by a kangaroo or shark, which is only one in eight million, according to the Nature Conservancy of Australia.

Meanwhile, the Lott claims the chances of winning division one is one in 64 million.

You are about 3200 times more likely to be struck by lightning, which has a one in 20,000 chance, based on calculations by University of Queensland professor Peter Adams.

A new report from public policy think tank The Australia Institute revealed Australians lost $36 billion to gambling in the 12 months to March this year.

This was an increase of close to $1.3 billion on the $34.3 billion lost in the 12 months to March 2025.
