Gift cards are the easy Christmas present almost half of all Aussies opt to grab for those hard to buy for loved ones, but some are better than others.

Financial comparison site RateCity has released a 'naughty and nice' list after checking the gift card fine print for problematic hidden fees or expiry dates.

Bunnings and JB-Hi-Fi fared well on the list, while warnings were issued for those looking to buy from Qantas and Hello Fresh, among others.

There are guidelines that stipulate gift cards can not have an expiry date shorter than three years or slug buyers with post-purchase fees.

"When shopping for a gift card, check the expiry and if it's earlier than December 2025, tell them that's not good enough," research director Sally Tindall said.

The 'nice' list

Bunnings is at the top of RateCity's nice list as it has no expiry date and will give you the remaining balance in cash if it's below $10.

Next up is JB Hi-Fi which also has no expiry, free delivery on physical cards and allows you to choose your own amount up to $500.

This is useful if you want to gift $122 instead of the usual allocated denominations like $100 or $150.

There is also free delivery on physical gift cards over $30 at Australia Post.

Finally, Amazon spruiks no expiry on the gift cards, no delivery costs and gift givers can choose their amount up to $2000.

The 'not-so-nice' list

Giftcardstore.com.au is first off the bat on the naughty list as the site can have fees as high as $21.66 for a $500 gift card.

Hello Fresh gifts have an unpublished expiry date and are only available on a subscription basis.
