Two people are dead after an SUV veered off a road and into a creek near the NSW-Queensland border overnight.

She was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Police divers and crash investigators were among those who rushed to the scene.

Morialta Road remains closed in both directions.
