Detectives believe a man's body may have been left in a Gold Coast home for two years after finding "mummified" remains.

Police sources told 9News a relative travelled from Canberra to visit the 69-year-old in his Benowa home on Edinburgh Road on April 17.

The relative raised concerns with police when a family member wouldn't let anyone see the man because he was "too unwell".

The body was found in a bed in the home where his wife and stepson were living.

Because of how long the man has been dead, police have not yet been able to determine if he has any injuries which could indicate the cause of death.

Nobody has been charged and police have not said if the death was suspicious.
