Police are investigating whether a road rage incident triggered a multi-vehicle crash on a Melbourne freeway.

The four-truck pile-up occurred at about 1pm, on the M80 Ring Road in Glenroy, which has left a man fighting for life.

The crash prompted hours of congestion on Melbourne's roads, causing chaos during the peak-hour commute.

9News understands police are investigating if a road rage incident triggered the crash.

It's understood police are looking for a dark Range Rover, which they believe cut in front of the truck and slammed on the brakes, triggering a domino effect.

The lanes for all Altona-bound lanes of the M80 Ring Road at Sydney Road and Pascoe Vale Road, Fawkner were closed for nearly four hours.

All lanes have now reopened.

There are significant delays on the M80, the Hume Freeway, Sydney Road, Camp Road, Pascoe Vale Road, Mahoneys Road, Cooper Street and Bell Street, and it will take some time for congestion to ease.
