Students devastated after learning of sudden school closure

More than 150 students in Victoria have been left devastated after learning their school would be closing in just six weeks.

The Mountain District Christian School (MSCS) Principal Jason Riding said the decision was made during a meeting with parents and the wider community last night.

He said the Monbulk school was forced to close its doors due to a decline in enrollments.

Fighting back tears, Riding told 9News Melbourne that they could no longer afford to keep the school open.

"We have had to get to an unfortunate position where we had to close the school at the end of the year," he said.

"We are working through supporting families and students today."

Speaking 9News Melbourne today, one parent said she was absolutely "devastated".

"I cried all night, to be honest," she said.

MSCS is located 40km from Melbourne.

There are just 150 students from prep to year 12 who attend the college, including fourteen year 11 pupils undertaking the VCE.

Since announcing its closure, there has been an outpouring of support for the school from the community, as well as letters from other local schools offering to take students.
