More troops on merit for IS fight
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will consider on merit any US request to increase Australia's military involvement in the fight against Islamic State extremists in the Middle East.
US President Donald Trump has flagged a new plan to defeat the terrorist group.
"We are already engaged, obviously, with the new administration in Washington as to what new approaches can be taken," Mr Turnbull told the National Press Club in Canberra on Wednesday.
"If new commitments are sought from us, we will obviously examine them carefully on their merits."
Australia has 780 Defence personnel deployed in the Middle East who are conducting air strikes in Iraq and Syria, carrying out special operations and training Iraqi soldiers.
Mr Turnbull noted that was the second largest contribution to the US-led coalition.
