THE STATISTICS ON CHILD SEX ABUSE

WHO IS COMING FORWARD?

* 62 per cent men

* 37 per cent women

* 30 per cent aged between 50 and 59

* 25 per cent between 60 and 69.

* 20 per cent between 40 and 49

* The average age at which abuse occurred: over 10 for boys, under 10 for girls

WHAT'S BEING REVEALED?

* Half the abuse involved penetration and about two thirds fondling

* On average, children were abused over a period of 2.8 years

* 89 per cent of abusers were men

WHERE DID ABUSE HAPPEN?

* 45 per cent in out-of-home care including orphanages, children's homes or foster care

* 60 per cent of the institutions in which abuse occurred were faith-based

* 23 per cent were government-managed

WHEN DID ABUSE HAPPEN

* Most commonly in the 1960s (28 per cent) followed by the 1970s (23 per cent)
