A NSW man has been rescued after he went missing in the Hunter region during heavy flooding two days ago.

The 56-year-old man was travelling along Allyn River Road in Upper Allyn with his dog on Tuesday around 9pm when flood waters swept his car off of the road and into a river.

The man managed to escape from his car with his dog and take refuge in a nearby cabin.

He was isolated in the cabin for two days by flood waters.

Yesterday personal items belonging to the man were found by members of the public who notified police.

Officers from the local area, along with paramedics and SES volunteers, attended the area and located the man and his dog.

The man and his dog were carried across the flood waters in a police vehicle and taken to John Hunter Hospital.

He is in a stable condition.
