A man has been arrested after a woman was shot at a property in rural Victoria this morning.

The 25-year-old woman was allegedly shot in the upper body on Mincha-Canary Road in Mincha at about 3am today.  

Police have been told the injured woman was walking with friends when she was shot.

She remains at Bendigo Base Hospital in a stable condition.

A 69-year-old man was arrested at the scene and is assisting police. No charges have yet been laid.

Neighbours have described the man as a passionate collector who has been a recent target for burglars.

The man's son Nezar claims his father was protecting himself.

"He's woken up an heard some noises, he's looked outside and seen a group people on his property and in fear of his life, this is what has resulted," he said.

The exact circumstances of the shooting are not yet known.

"Any incident involving a firearm is concerning for police, and certainly the Armed Crime Squad will be investigating this thoroughly," Detective Senior Sergeant Brad Potts said.
