Almost one million changes have been made to the electoral roll ahead of the same-sex marriage postal survey.

The Australian Electoral Commission said more than 16 million people were enrolled, with 765,000 changes made since the announcement of the survey, and at least another 165,000 transactions to be processed over the weekend.

There were also 90,000 new names on the roll, which closed at midnight on Thursday.

When the changes are finalised the AEC will send the information to the Australian Bureau of Statistics which is conducting the survey.
