They’re arguably one of the most popular families to call the White House home, and yesterday it was Michelle Obama’s turn to say goodbye to the world.

With barely a week left in office, the First Lady joined Jimmy Fallon the Tonight Show to talk about her time as FLOTUS.

“I didn’t think it was going to be that emotional,” Mrs Obama said.

“It’s been surprisingly emotional for all of us in ways that we didn’t expect.”

The popular First Lady spoke about her wanting children across American to not be afraid.

“When I think about the fact that some of them are afraid about what’s to come. I don’t want them to be afraid.

“I want them to embrace the future and know that the world is getting better.”

The interview wasn’t all serious though, with Fallon taking the time to help Mrs Obama write some thank you notes.

“Thank you Barack, for proving you’re not a lame duck, but my very own silver fox,” she penned to her husband.

“Thank you, inauguration day, or as I like to call it, let’s move,” referring to the program she created to rid the US of childhood obesity.

Not to be out-staged, Fallon also wrote a thank you note to FLOTUS herself.

“Thank you, First Lady Michelle Obama, for bringing a whole new meaning to the phrase the right to ‘bear’ arms,” he wrote to rapturous applause and alongside a picture of her in a sleeveless top.

“Thank you, Mrs Obama, for always promoting physical fitness. And hey, since you like exercising so much, how about running for president?” with the pair breaking into laughter.
