Mercedes Corby flies to Bali to bring Schapelle home

Schapelle Corby's sister Mercedes has arrived in Bali to retrieve her sibling as she prepares to return to Australia after almost 13 years.

Arriving about 5pm local time from Brisbane in a black t-shirt and jeans, Mercedes Corby was picked up at Denpasar airport by her estranged husband Wayan Widyartha.

When asked by reporters whether she was excited to see her sister, Mercedes replied: "Yes I am."

Mr Widyartha told reporters to write "good news" about Corby and her family.

Earlier in Brisbane, Mercedes told 9NEWS: "I'm glad to be going over there to bring my sister home", admitting Schapelle's return had been a "long time coming".

It comes more than three years after Corby was released from Kerobokan prison on parole in February 2014.

On May 27, the convicted Gold Coast drug smuggler will have officially served her sentence and be free to return to Australia for the first time since October 2004.

The then 27-year-old was originally sentenced to 20 years in prison for attempting to smuggle 4.1kg of cannabis into Bali in a body board bag. She made international headlines in a case that was played out around the country.

Corby won parole in February 2014 and will be out seven years earlier than first thought.

Now 39, Schapelle Corby has been spending her remaining time living a modest life near the island's popular beaches.

She has been spending time getting fit and avoiding anything that may compromise her freedom including conditions such as avoiding the media and regularly presenting herself to police.

She will report to the parole office and have authorities sign her log book one last time, signifying the end of her sentence.

A new passport, organised by the Australian consulate given the expiration of her previous one, will be arranged and she will be deported on a direct flight to Queensland.

9NEWS has been told Australian Federal Police officers will need to be in attendance at Brisbane Airport to shield Schapelle and the Corby family through the terminal.
