Wild winds and destructive conditions are set to return in Melbourne this morning, with winds of almost 100km/h already recorded.

Winds are forecast to strengthen on this morning ahead of a cold front that will move over Victoria later in the day bringing strong gusts to southern and central areas, the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) said.

Winds of almost 100km/h have been recorded at Melbourne Airport, while SES crews have responded to reports of trees down.

BoM senior forecaster Scott Williams said conditions aren't expected to ease until the afternoon.

"There's potential for damage, but probably not on the scale we saw a fortnight back," he told 3AW.

The main centres affected could include Melbourne, Ballarat, Geelong, Wonthaggi and Bacchus Marsh.
