Aspiring model's 'big plans' cut short in senseless stabbing death at Melbourne bus stop

The heartbroken family of an aspiring model stabbed to death at a bus stop in Melbourne's outer south-west overnight have told of his plans to move overseas.

Nathan Mwanza, 23, was stabbed several times at a bus stop near Haines Drive in Wyndham Vale about 8pm.

9News understands he became involved in an argument with two others onboard a bus travelling towards his Werribee home and was attacked by the pair when he got off.

Emergency services were called to the bus stop, where they tried to save Mwanza, but he died at the scene.

Mwanza's family have described him as a "gentle giant" who was known as the family comedian.

"He wasn't a troublemaker. He would never, ever hurt a fly," sister Naomi Mwanza said.

"He doesn't like problems. He doesn't have any issues with anyone.

"He had big plans. He wanted to move to the UK.

"We had plans to even go to visit our cousins in Canada in June."

His father Samuel Mwanza pleaded for answers.

"Why they kill my son? For nothing," he said.

"Stop killing people for nothing."

The second eldest of six children, Mwanza moved to Australia from the Democratic Republic of the Congo with his family 10 years ago.

"We left our countries to come here because this is a safe place and not to have to deal with this kind of thing, you know," uncle Tresor Mugunyi said.

"They think this is a movie.

"They just go out and nothing's going to happen to them obviously and we've seen, you know, after two weeks after a day they are on bail."

Mwanza's killers fled down Vaughan Chase and remain on the run.

They are described as Asian in appearance and aged in their late teens to early 20s.

One of them was wearing a white t-shirt, dark jeans, runners and a cap.

The other was wearing a dark jacket and a cap.

Nathan had no criminal history and detectives are still trying to work out why he was ambushed.

"Our victim was not known to police, he was on the bus minding his own business," Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said.

Thomas called on anyone with information or relevant dashcam or CCTV footage to come forward.

Wyndham Vale residents say they are fed up with violence in the area.

"Whatever has to be done, this has to stop... there has to be some sort of accountability," Mugunyi said.

In a separate incident just last month, 24-year-old Lino Atem was stabbed to death just 500 metres up the road.
