Man dies after head-on collision with tram in Melbourne

A man has died after the car he was driving collided head-first with a tram in Melbourne's east.

Just before 9am this morning, a 50-year-old man from Hawthorn was driving a black wagon along Camberwell Road when he veered in front of a tram, resulting in a head-on collision. He died at the scene.

Both vehicles were estimated to have been travelling about 60 km/h prior to the crash.

There were about 20 passengers on the tram, none of whom were seriously injured.

The driver of the tram was treated for a minor wound to his head.

Victoria Police said the exact circumstances of the crash were yet to be determined and in investigation was underway.

Police say a baby seat was in the rear of the car but the male driver was sole occupant during the crash. Nine

A child seat was found in the back seat of the black wagon but the male driver was the only occupant of the car at the time of the crash.
