Melbourne has been named the friendliest city in the world by a new travel survey.

The Victorian capital – dubbed “Australia’s capital of cool” - shared the title with Auckland, topping the list compiled by Conde Nast Traveller magazine readers.

The rankings factored in the manners of a city’s residents, culture, food and cleanliness.

“One of the classiest cities in the world,” one reader said of Melbourne.

“Famous for their wonderful sense of humour,” another added.

Auckland leapt from sixteenth in last year’s rankings to equal first place on the back of its “clear air,” “fresh food,” and “amazing culture”.

Sydneysiders also received high praise from readers, coming in fifth place.

Sydney was dubbed the “most beautiful large city in the world” with the world’s best food, with Chef Peter Gilmore’s The Rocks restaurant Quay receiving a special mention.

At the other end of the scale, South African capital Johannesburg earned the dubious award of the unfriendliest city in the world, primarily due to safety concerns.

The cities that scored the lowest points generally did so due to reader concerns over location, political climate and difficulties overcoming basic language barriers, the magazine said.
