McDonald's takes franchises from Mildura man in racist attack

McDonald's has stepped in to take over the franchises of a Mildura man filmed verbally abusing his Aboriginal neighbours.

A video, which shows Robert Vigors and his partner Karen Ridge questioning artist Robby Wirramanda Knight over his Indigenous heritage, went viral online after it was posted to social media on Saturday.

In the video, Mr Vigors asks Mr Knight "which one per cent of" him was Aboriginal.

"You claiming to be Aboriginal? You make me laugh. People like you make a mockery of true Aboriginals," Mr Vigors can be heard saying.

He is also heard saying: "OK, you can do nice paintings and everything and I respect that worth. Don't get me wrong, I respect that worth.

"This is the problem with this country and this is the problem with so many people in this area … people like you make a mockery of true Aboriginals."

Ms Ridge is also seen trying to pull down an Aboriginal flag in the artists' front yard.

As she attempts to take down the flag, Mr Wirramanda cries out, "it's too strong for you, Karen".

Over the weekend the hashtag #toostrongforyoukaren was trending strongly on Twitter.

In a statement, McDonald's confirmed Mr Vigors had been removed from the two franchises he was running.

"McDonald's confirms the Company has taken over the operation of the Mildura and Irymple restaurants, effective immediately, and Robert Vigors has left the system and is no longer involved.

"McDonald's will be engaging with its employees regarding the change in arrangements, to ensure the ongoing operation of the restaurants."

Victoria Police have confirmed they attended Mr Knight's home and were investigating the incident.

The video of the racist rant was posted on Twitter by Mr Knight's daughter on Saturday.

In her tweet, the daughter said her parents were safe and trying to process the confrontation.

"My parents didn't 'do' anything to set them off, just moved in next door," she wrote.
