Matt Stanton has been appointed chief executive officer of Nine after stepping in as acting chief executive in September last year.

Stanton joined Nine in 2022 as chief financial and strategy officer and stepped into the top job during a period of change for the network.

In an email sent to staff following his appointment, Stanton said it is an "enormous honour and privilege" to lead Australia's biggest media business.

"We have an ambitious transformation agenda to ensure we are best positioned for the future," Stanton said.

"The external environment for all media companies is tough, and we must continue to reset and reshape Nine to ensure we thrive.

"I recognise that change is not easy, but you have collectively embraced the challenges we face as a group and we are already seeing improvements across the business and in your workplaces."

Stanton said it was now business as usual as he transitions into the role on a permanent basis.

Nine Chair Catherine West announced the news today in a statement to the Australian Securities Exchange.

"The Board is delighted to confirm Matt as the Nine CEO. Following a thorough and competitive recruitment process, Matt was clearly the best credentialled leader to maintain the momentum on our strategic and cultural transformation," West said.

"He has done an outstanding job as Acting CEO."

"Matt's mix of strategic and commercial acumen, transformation and media experience, strong values, and an open and collaborative approach to leadership, make him the right person to lead Nine."

The new Nine boss stepped up as acting chief executive after Mike Sneesby stepped down on September 12 last year.
