Maserati gets stuck in Sydney floodwaters

A Sydney driver in a very expensive car has felt the impact of the sudden and powerful rainstorm to have hit the city in recent hours.

A blue Maserati was filmed stuck in the floodwaters in Redfern in the inner-city just after 11am this morning.

Nearby office worker Fleur Mitchell filmed the six-figure sports car stalled and flashing its hazard lights on Redfern Street, just near where the South Sydney Rabbitohs train.

"The owner was sitting inside obviously waiting for a tow truck," Ms Mitchell told nine.com.au.

The video shows several cars driving onto the wrong side of the road to overtake the Maserati, but one stops midway through the move to rethink.

The SES repeatedly warns motorists never to drive through floodwaters.

Too late for this Maserati though.

Sydney is copping a drenching, with 31mm falling in just 30 minutes, with lightning, flash flooding and heavy winds predicted for the metropolitan area as well as the Illawarra.

Motorists have been advised to avoid Anzac Bridge due to flooding, and told to exercise extreme caution if they must drive across it.

All staff have been removed from the tarmac at Sydney Airport due to lightning, a spokesman told 9news.com.au. 

All flights are experiencing delays of half an hour.

Canterbury had more than 45mm throughout the morning, making it the suburb's wettest day in 6 months.

Lightning is expected to continue throughout the duration of the storm and BoM has advised those in affected areas to keep at least eight metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences. 

The storm is expected to ease during the afternoon, but periods of rain are forecast to start up again this evening until mid-morning tomorrow, especially along the coast.

Areas on the coast could see more 50mm of rainfall, Mr Sharpe said.
