Massive flames erupt from burning car in Mascot

A driver has narrowly escaped a burning car that has been destroyed in Mascot in Sydney's southeast.

Emergency crews were called to Southern Cross Drive after reports of the fire at 11.30pm.

Police arrived and shut down the northbound lanes allowing NSW Fire and Rescue crews to get in and extinguish the blaze.

A number of small explosions could be heard as firefighters tackled the inferno, with threw flames high into the air.

The driver did not suffer any injuries. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
