Police investigate 'suspicious' death of woman found in Melbourne waterway

Homicide detectives are treating the death of a woman who was found in a Melbourne waterway as "suspicious".

A passerby discovered the woman's body in the Maribyrnong River near Smithfield Road in Flemington yesterday morning.

Police said the woman was yet to be identified and they were in the process of speaking to the next of kin.

It comes as police responded to a call about 9am after a man's body was found in the same river.

The body of a man, who is yet to be identified, was first discovered by a member of the public near Saltriver Place in Footscray.

"Enquiries are underway in relation to identifying the man, however it appears at this early stage that this death is likely to be non-suspicious," police said.

Police said there was "nothing to link" the two deaths.
