Manhunt ends in dramatic rooftop chase

A two-hour manhunt in Adelaide ended in drama after a man was tackled by police on a supermarket rooftop.

Officers were called to South Terrace in the city after reports of a man carrying a knife.

The man fled to Gilbert Street, which was quickly locked down about 8am local time.

Specialist officers backed up by dogs and drones moved in to investigate a local supermarket.

Witnesses say the man broke down a door in the building and raced up and down a hallway looking for a way out.

Wayne Henry was confronted by the suspect and gave chase.

"He slammed the door in my face and so when I came back with the police officer he'd vanished," he said.

"So I'm looking under stuff and we just couldn't find him, but he'd gone up in the ceiling."

The suspect spent nearly an hour in the ceiling before he was arrested.

A 26-year-old Oaklands Park man was charged with offences including property damage and hindering police.

Investigators claim the man is also wanted for other matters.
