Two charged after six-tonne drug seizure in Sydney

Two people will face court today after police uncovered more than six tonnes of an illicit drug in a bust in Sydney.

On Monday, police conducting a firearm compliance check in Croydon found a parcel sent from a storage facility in Homebush.

It allegedly contained about five litres of butanediol, commonly known as bute.

Police say the drug has been previously linked to sexual assaults and overdoses.

The parcel was seized and an investigation began.

Police later carried out a search warrant at a postal facility in Silverwater, where they seized 225kg of a substance again believed to be bute.

More than six tonnes of the drug, commonly known as "bute", were seized. NSW Police

On Tuesday, police searched a post office in Rhodes and seized 23 litres of what is believed to be bute.

After more inquiries, police stopped a vehicle on Nipper Street in Homebush and seized 110kg of bute.

The driver, a 27-year-old man, was arrested.

Two more search warrants were carried out at a storage facility in Homebush and at a unit on Liverpool Road in Ashfield.

At the unit, police allege they found about $28,000 in cash.

At the storage facility, police allege they found more than 6.3 tonnes of bute.

A 28-year-old woman was arrested at the unit.

She was released without charge before being arrested again at a home in Ashfield at about 3.15pm yesterday.

She was charged with taking part in commercial drug supply.

The 27-year-old man arrested during the vehicle stop was charged with commercial drug supply.

Both were refused bail and will appear in court today.
