Man who split nurse's head open in drug-fuelled attack sentenced

A man has been sentenced over a drug-fuelled attack on a Sydney nurse that split her head open and left her with 16 stitches.

Bec Davis was finishing nightshift at Westmead Hospital in September last year when Jack Solomons attacked her, leaving her with serious injuries.

Solomons had been admitted to the emergency department about 5am and was given the last remaining bed.

He then set upon a security guard, jumping on his back before turning on Ms Davis.

The specialist nurse's scalp was split to her skull during the attack and she needed 16 stitches.

Solomons, 26, was today handed a sentence of two years and six months to be served under supervision in the community.

As part of the order, he must complete drug rehabilitation and engage in mental health treatment.

Last year, Ms Davis spoke about the impact of the attack and how frequently she and her colleagues are subject to abuse and harassment.

"There's almost a daily occurrence of verbal aggression within our department," she told 9News.

"We've had numerous occasions of spitting and we've had numerous doctors being physically assaulted."
