Nurse allegedly attacked in hospital recounts bloody incident

A Sydney nurse has recounted the moment she was allegedly attacked by a patient in Westmead Hospital.

Bec Davies, 31, was allegedly set upon by 26-year-old Jack Soloman.

Mr Soloman was admitted to the emergency department at about 5am yesterday.

Hospital staff claim he did not seem aggressive and initially they did not raise the alarm.

"All of a sudden he jumped out of bed and tried to go for our security guard, and chasing him, and started punching him in the back," Ms Davies told 9News.

"And then the security guard was so scared he just started running – he ran round the whole department … in front of all the other patients."

Ms Davies claimed Mr Soloman stopped chasing the security guard and came for her.

"He looked like he wanted to kill someone," she said.

"I was shocked that I became the target, out of nowhere."

Ms Davies said she tried to run, but Mr Soloman's arms went around her neck and she collapsed into a doorframe.

The resulting injury, which laid her scalp open to her skull, needed 16 staples.

With Mr Soloman having been given the department's only spare bed, Ms Davies had to leave her own hospital for treatment elsewhere.

The security guard was treated at the scene.

The alleged attacker was restrained and sedated.

Mr Soloman remained in hospital overnight before being taken to a police station about 11am today, where he was charged.

He was refused bail and will appear in court tomorrow.

A Western Sydney Local Health District spokesperson said any violence against healthcare workers is unacceptable.

"Our staff are on the frontline caring for you and deserve to be treated with respect at all times," the spokesperson said.

Ms Davies said she wanted to speak out to help her colleagues.

She called for greater protection for healthcare professionals at work.

Now recovering at home, she said she was being well supported by Westmead Hospital.

And she can't wait to get back to work.

"I always wanted to work in the emergency room – it's been my life and my dream," she said.
