A Sydney café is open and staff are recovering this morning after an ugly confrontation with a customer.

The unprovoked attack on a barista at the Cafe Dzajko in Tempe was filmed by the customer who began yelling after seeing a sign asking for his proof of vaccination.

However, the stunt spectacularly backfired and instead saw the business flooded with support.

Co-owner Sally told Today the staff were shaken up by the incident but were now doing okay.

"They were quite shaken yesterday and we assured them that we would be there to support them and they are doing well," she said.

"We have been so grateful and so surprised by all the community support and we are just overwhelmed."

In the video of the incident, the man can be heard saying: "What make you think that I am going to hand over my medical and private information of whether I am vaccinated or not vaccinated just to buy a cup of coffee."

He then accused the café of "discrimination and putrid attempt to segregate".

The café was displaying the same NSW Government signage seen in stores across the state which asks customers to check-in and show their proof of vaccination.

Barista Andressa Kist kept her cool despite being terrified as she made coffee.

"I am a little bit scared and frustrated because I was just following the rules," she told 9News.

The café has been serving locals for 20 years and loyal customers reacted to the video with dismay. Many have been coming in to buy extra coffees and cakes. Some customers have even made donations to help the business.

The cafe's co-owner, Diche Dzajko, described the man as "faceless" and accused him of "going around attacking people for no reason".

However, the attempt to shame the café backfired with people across Sydney and beyond pledging their support.

Mr Dzajko said people had been giving them extra money with their coffees, and even writing on their Facebook page.

"Best wishes from Canberra. Will grab a brew when I visit next," one person wrote.

"I'm going out of my way to get coffee from you next time I'm in Sydney," another said.
