An Anzac appeal charity tin holding up to $1000 has been stolen by a man buying an icecream from a shop in north Melbourne.

Police say the man was loitering around the counter of the Queens Parade shop in North Fitzroy just before 10pm on Saturday, March 29, when he cut the chain to the RSL tin and placed his jumper over it.

He put the tin in a green reusable bag and rode off on his bike.
