A man has been shot in the leg at a motel in Melbourne's north after a dispute about unpaid rent.

Emergency services were called the StayInn in Coburg North about 3.30am today after witnesses reported hearing fighting and a loud bang.

On arrival police found a man aged in his 30s suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg and a gash to his head.

He was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

A report by the Herald Sun in January claimed the StayInn doubles as transitional housing for homeless people and a half-way house for recently released prisoners.

One tenant wrote in a TripAdvisor review in November 2016 that they were “so afraid I packed the room furniture against the door” and said there were “bullet holes in glass”.

A man who claims to regularly stay at the inn told 9NEWS he heard two men arguing about unpaid rent shortly before the alleged shooting.

A man and a woman were interviewed separately by police but have since been released.

The alleged shooter is still on the run.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
