A man is in hospital in a serious condition after he was allegedly glassed by a stranger in Melbourne's CBD.

The 27-year-old was allegedly hit in the head by a glass bottle on Elizabeth Street near Flinders Street Station just before 7.15pm yesterday.

His attacker allegedly then fled the scene.

Shortly afterwards, police found a 46-year-old Frankston man nearby and arrested him over the attack.

The victim, who is from Narre Warren, was taken to the Alfred Hospital in a serious condition.

Police are still investigating the attack.
