An audience member rather than a guest has stolen the show on The Project when he used a shout-out to his partner who has been battling cancer to propose on live TV.

After presenting a package of "good news" from around the world, host Carrie Bickmore singled out a woman named Tara sitting in the front row of the studio audience.

"We just want to give a shout-out to one of our audience members tonight who is with us, who had a huge year battling breast cancer, almost finished chemo. We know you are here with your boyfriend Jarred, we want to say good luck. Jarred, she seems like an absolutely incredible woman," Bickmore said.

With the cameras still lingering on the couple as the applause died down, Jarred said: "Tara is probably the strongest, most toughest person I’ve ever met.

"She is the best mum, the best partner, she is my best friend, we make the best team and I want to spend the rest of my life with you, Tara. Will you marry me?" Jarred said on one knee with ring at the ready.

"Oh my god yes," Tara said.

The audience erupted in applause yet again as the couple shared a passionate kiss that co-host Waleed Aly later joked may have had the show pushed back to a later time slot.

Panellist Ryan Fitzgerald congratulated Tara and gave her a large bouquet of flowers.

"You did well, big fella, because we could see you sweating the whole time," he said to Jarred.
