Man charged with murder after grandmother found dead at Maryborough unit

A 39-year-old man has been charged with murder after a 52-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed to death in Melbourne’s north-west.
Emergency services were called to a home on Alma Street, Maryborough, where they found Karen Ashcroft with serious injuries on Monday.
She was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.
Her alleged killer was arrested at the scene and taken to hospital for self-inflicted injuries.
Dectives today charged the Percydale local with one count of murder.
He will face the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court this afternoon.
Residents told 9NEWS they are shocked by the grisly death, which unfolded soon after a gathering at the home.
One local woman described Ms Ashcroft as "caring” and generous, saying “she’d give the shirt off her back”.
The popular mother grew up in Marysborough and often took in foster children.
"I feel so bad for her children right now, they are grieving so badly," Ms Bairns said.
