Man knocked out on Sydney street at 10.30pm

A man was knocked out in Sydney's last night in a single-punch attack on the weekend said to be the first real test of the city's bars and clubs' lock-out laws.  

Paramedics were called to treat a 30-year-old victim at 10.30pm near the corners of George and Liverpool streets, an area notorious for violence on weekends. 

"There's been an assault outside World Square," a police spokesperson told the Daily Telegraph. 

Crowds of people out on Mardi Gras night forced the closure of westbound bus lane of George Street to allow paramedics to treat the unconscious man as distressed friends looked on. 

He was still unconscious when he was taken to St Vincent's Hospital. 

A police spokeswoman said he was treated for minor injuries and remains in a stable condition. 

Those responsible escaped and no arrests have yet been made but police are continuing to investigate the incident.
