Man injured in meat cleaver attack

A man has serious head injuries after he was attacked with a meat cleaver outside a unit in Sydney's west.

Police were called to the South Granville unit at about 6am (AEDT) on Thursday following reports of an assault after an argument between two men.

Police say a 53-year-old man allegedly swung a meat cleaver at a 62-year-old man, striking him on the side of the face and causing a serious head wound.

The injured man sought refuge inside his unit but his attacker allegedly tried to gain entry by smashing the front window with the meat cleaver.

The 62-year-old ran out the back door and alerted neighbours, who called police.

The injured man was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to Westmead Hospital. His injuries include a broken jaw and nerve and muscle damage.

Police arrested the 53-year-old who was taken to hospital and is undergoing assessment. Charges are expected to be laid.
