Hunt for suspect over throat-slashing death at Melbourne hotel

Police are confident of tracking down the person responsible for the death of a man found with his throat cut at a hotel in Melbourne's Southbank precinct overnight.

Officers were called to a hotel room on the eighth floor of the Crown Metropol on Whiteman Street just after 2.30am, where they made the grim discovery. 

Police said the man had suffered a laceration to his neck and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim is yet to be formally identified but is believed to be aged in his 30s.

The death is being treated as suspicious and Homicide Squad detectives are investigating.

Police said they believed the victim had been in a heated argument with at least two other men immediately before his death.

Detectives believe the parties involved in the incident were known to each other and the person who booked the room was known to police.

"There are people we believe can assist us with this investigation, people that were present in the hotel room, and we're trying to make contact with those people at the moment," Homicide Squad Detective Sergeant Nathan Favre said.

No one has been arrested and Det. Sgt Favre could not comment on whether any weapon had been recovered.

There is no evidence to indicate the attack was a result of a domestic dispute or that it was related to drugs or gang activity.

Police have spoken to a person who witnessed the assault, but say that person is not a suspect.

Detectives also said the hotel room was booked under the name of a person known to police.

Police are examining CCTV from inside the hotel in an effort to identify anyone of interest.
