A woman is being questioned over a suspected hit-and-run in Perth's north-east.

The Tonkin highway was shut for more than 12 hours today after a man was found dead on the road.

The car police suspect hit him was nowhere to be found when officers arrived at the scene just north of Benara Road in Noranda about 2.30am.

Four lanes were shut as a crime scene was set up and police scoured the area for clues to what was initially considered a mystery death.

They now say the man in his 40s was hit by a car, which then left the scene.

The suspected driver was being questioned earlier tonight but she had not been charged.

It's unclear what the man was doing on the busy road, just metres from an overpass.

Police asked anyone with information or footage of the incident to come forward.
