A man shot and left in a pool of blood while his girlfriend called an ambulance is in a serious but stable condition in a Melbourne hospital.

The 26-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to his leg during the attack at Kurunjang about 4.40am on Thursday.

Paramedics controlled the bleeding and stabilised his condition before taking him to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition.

A neighbour said she heard the shooting and then saw a man lying on the nature strip.

"We've raced to the window and from that window we can obviously see everything," the woman told the Nine Network.

"We've seen him on the ground screaming and his girlfriend pretty much on top of him on the phone to the ambulance trying to call them.

"There was just blood every where."

Neighbours say it's not the first time there has been trouble at the home, with police called to the property frequently.

Nine News also reports that the man has so far been unable to be interviewed and his girlfriend is refusing to co-operate with police.

Victoria Police was unable to confirm those reports.
