It's meant to be the season of giving, but a grinch has been caught stealing Christmas lights from the front yard of a Queensland home.

CCTV captured the thief as he pulled up in his car and took the decorations from the fence outside a Hervey Bay property.

The incident comes after Christmas decorations were cut down and destroyed across multiple streets in the Brisbane suburb of Camp Hill this week.

Jano Kotza's from Christmas Decorations Brisbane told 9News it was disappointing but not surprising.

"It's sad actually because it's supposed to be the time of giving and the time of love and joy," she said.

"We've actually had an eight-foot Christmas tree go missing from a shopping centre."

But the decoration expert says there is a simple way to make sure your lights stay exactly where you want them.

With most thieves opportunistic, Ms Kotzas says make sure you tie them down.

"Cheapest and easiest way would be using cable ties, to be honest," she said.

"Make sure you fasten them as tightly as you can."
