A man has been taken to hospital with head injuries after he was beaten on the head with a hammer by another man during a workplace dispute in Sydney's CBD.

Horrified onlookers saw the fight break out at around 8am outside the Insurance Australia Group office on George Street.

It's alleged that a 58 year-old man hit the 38 year-old over the head with what's believed to have been a hammer.

Paramedics arrived to find the victim bleeding and took him to hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

A witness told Fairfax that the injured man, who was wearing a suit, walked out of the building with a bandage around his head before being taken away in an ambulance.

Police have since arrested the 58-year-old from Parramatta and have taken him to Sydney City police station for further questioning.
