Man ‘racially abused’ passengers before launching savage attack on bus in Sydney's lower north shore

A 30-year-old man has been charged after he was filmed smashing the windscreen of a Sydney bus following the alleged assault of a passenger.

Police were called to the scene at Lane Cove interchange about 6pm yesterday, a NSW Police spokesman said.

The bus had pulled into the interchange earlier, around 5pm, after passengers banded together to demand the 30-year-old leave the bus.

It is claimed the man has been racially abusing passengers and threw chopsticks at a couple of Asian appearance before assaulting a 22-year-old male passenger.

The 30-year-old was asked to exit the bus, whereupon he was filmed snapping off the bus’s windscreen wiper.

Video of the incident shows him striking the window with the wiper and then his bare hands, breaking it.

People can be heard yelling and expressing disbelief and fear.

"We've all got you on video, buddy," one man can be heard saying.

"Folks, I need to call the cops on this," another says.

"He's breaking the bus," another person says.

The man allegedly fled the scene but was arrested by officers in Phoenix Avenue, Lane Cove, a short time later.

He was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital under police guard.

The man has since been charged with common assault and malicious damage, and will appear at Hornsby Local Court on Wednesday April 6.
