Police pursuit of man accused of stealing war memorial plaques ends in crash
A man has been arrested in Sydney's west overnight after allegedly stealing war memorial plaques and leading police on a chase that ended in a fiery crash.
The 34-year-old allegedly stole seven brass plaques from Fairfield RSL club early today before he was arrested.
Following the theft, police at about 1.50am spotted a Toyota sedan driving dangerously along Horsley Drive in Fairfield.

When the driver failed to stop, officers started a pursuit, which ended moments later as the vehicle crashed into a shopfront at The Boulevarde in Fairfield Heights, and caught fire.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze, while paramedics treated the driver, a 34-year-old man, at the scene.

He was taken to Liverpool Hospital under police guard.

Police set up a crime scene and searched the vehicle, uncovering the plaques which have been seized for examination.
Officers are continuing investigations.
The alleged theft comes ahead of next Monday's Remembrance Day which commemorates members of Australia's armed forces who have died in wars.
