Man's jaw broken in alleged random attack on Sydney street

Police are investigating after a man was allegedly attacked at random in North Sydney last night.

The man was allegedly struck whilst walking on Mount Street.

CCTV footage shows him walk past someone heading in the opposite direction.

The alleged offender then turns and apparently without warning hits the first man in the jaw, dropping him to the ground.

Bystanders rushed to help.

"I was coming down the stairs here and I hear someone screaming. So, I came down, I see a guy on the floor," a witness told 9News.

"Another guy on him, yelling. 

"We start, we are two, three people around, and we start to try to push the guy out."

The alleged attacker, who walked away down the street, also allegedly threatened a group of girls before the punch that broke the man's jaw.

"The guy was really in shock and you can see that. He was like, 'What happened?'" a witness said.

The victim was taken to hospital.

The 44-year-old alleged offender was arrested after a struggle with police and also taken to hospital.

By this afternoon, no charges had been laid.
