Magda Szubanski elated with success of same-sex marriage bill

Prominent marriage equality advocate Magda Szubanski admitted her stamina was not as strong as some politicians last night following the passage of same-sex marriage laws through the Lower House.

"I couldn't party, I didn't have the stamina to go quite as long as some of the politicians. They're hardcore. Dude, this town (Canberra), they know how to party," she joked on TODAY.

"What an amazing day. Wake up this morning and we're all equal and what a beautiful feeling that is."

Szubanski's criticism of the need for a postal vote has not lessened since the bill's resounding passage through parliament yesterday afternoon.

"It's a little bit like, 'We're gonna run you over with a bus, but it's okay because you'll get the insurance compensation at the end'," she said.

"The Australian people have been remarkable through this and their support has been consistent. But there was no regulation around this, there was no governance.

"I've been called a pedophile, a pervert... I don't care, it's water off a duck's back. But for other people who are more vulnerable, or who are less further along in their journey, who are struggling with it themselves - it has been very damaging."

The high-profile comedian hopes this is the final hurdle in the debate.

"There's been a huge shift in attitudes towards LGBTQI people, like just a massive, massive shift," she said.

"A lot of people are going to feel far less burdened and much more able to be themselves, and be themselves in the... broader community."
