CCTV emerges of Commodore racing through red light, hitting boy

Confronting CCTV footage has emerged of the moment an allegedly unregistered Commodore sped through a red light and struck a 12-year-old boy in Brisbane.

The boy was rushed to hospital with critical head injuries after being hit while riding his bike in the suburb of Macgregor shortly after midday on Thursday.

Police charged a 24-year-old Wynnum West man in relation to the serious traffic crash on Friday.

In the CCTV footage, a sign in the foreground largely obscures the collision but the bicycle can be seen bouncing away in pieces as a streetlight topples over the road.

The male driver and his passenger then allegedly got out of the car and fled on foot.

Police allege the driver raced through the red light after a police car tried to pull him over at approximately midday on Kessels road.

The police had been doing registration checks when they spotted the unregistered green Holden.

The boy was rushed to Queensland Children's Hospital in a serious condition suffering head injuries.

He is now in a stable condition but remains in hospital.

In a statement issued on Friday evening, Queensland Police said two men had been taken in custody in relation to the crash.

A 24-year-old and 19-year-old, both from Wynnum West, were taken into custody "without incident" at a home in Woodridge.

The 24-year-old man has been charged with one count each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, driving without a licence, unregistered vehicle, uninsured vehicle and fail to comply with duties of driver involved in a crash.

He is expected to appear before Brisbane Magistrates Court on Saturday.

The 19-year-old man, who was assisting police, has since been released without charge.
