Motorists were forced to sit in long traffic delays this morning after a truck fire forced the closure of the M5 East in Sydney.

Traffic authorities closed the westbound lanes in Kingsgrove from General Holmes Drive as a result of the fire.

The smouldering truck was surrounded earlier by emergency crews, with thick foam used to extinguish the blaze seeping down the side of the road.

There is a reduced speed limit of 60km/h in place with motorists advised to slow down and exercise caution.

Both westbound lanes have reopened after emergency services assessed the road for repairs.

Drivers should allow additional travel time as traffic remains heavy in both directions.

Buses through Rockdale, Kogarah, Brighton-Le-Sands and Ramsgate are delayed up to 25 minutes due to heavy traffic in the area.
