LNP begins hunt for Nicholls' replacement

Tim Nicholls' political body isn't even cold and the LNP has already started finding a replacement.

Nicholls called Annastacia Palaszczuk this morning congratulating her on winning a second term and resigning from his party's leadership. It's uncertain whether he will remain in parliament.

Within the hour his deputy, Deb Frecklington, announced her bid to become the party's first female leader.

The country lawyer who represents Joh Bjelke-Petersen's former seat of Nanango has nominated as her deputy former rugby league referee Tim Mander.

Mander is seen by many as a potential leader and only narrowly lost the vote that saw Nicholls assume the title.

It's expected Palaszczuk will meet with the Queensland governor this afternoon when all the seats will be formally declared.

A new cabinet line up is the final bit of unfinished political business before the year is over.
