The Morrison government will soon pick an independent inspector-general to police live animal exports.

The coalition decided to reinstate the inspector-general, which was originally created by Labor when it was in power in 2013, after the trade was rocked by shocking footage last year.

Draft laws making the position permanent were ticked off by the lower house on Wednesday after breezing through the Senate last week.
