Man's close call as e-bike battery explodes moments after being thrown outside

A Sydney homeowner has had a close call with an explosive e-bike battery that erupted into flames just minutes after he threw it outside.

The second-hand e-bike caught alight at 2am today at a home in Guildford, in Sydney's west.

The bike was purchased by the homeowner just one day ago.

The owner told FRNSW that he had placed the battery into the bike and noticed a small spark earlier in the evening.  FRNSW

He threw the battery into an outside courtyard as a precaution, where it exploded shortly after.

The battery was captured exploding on camera.

Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze and submerged the battery into a tub of water to make sure it didn't reignite.

No one was harmed in the incident.

FRNSW said the incident is a reminder to never leave e-bike or e-scooter batteries charging inside around flammable material.
