Lipton refutes claims its tea contains worms in response to a viral video

A video which supposedly showed Lipton tea bags contained "worms" has been shot down by the company in a detailed response, but social media isn't buying it.

On Saturday, Ismat Raza from Pakistan posted a video to Facebook in which she claims to have discovered several worms inside all of her Lipton lemon-flavoured green tea bags.

Ms Raza's video went viral, quickly garnishing more than 6.2 million views.

The video sparked the attention of the global tea manufacturer who said the "worms" in the video are in fact lemon flavoured pieces.

To prove its point, Lipton posted their own video to Facebook clearly showing the pieces dissolving in boiling water.

"There are no 'worms' in our tea bags. These are small lemon flavor pieces which have been mistaken for worms. If you put these lemon flavor pieces in hot water they will dissolve as you can see from this video," Lipton said in a statement.

However social critics weren’t prepared to let facts get in the way of a good story and lambasted the company for allowing insects to enter its products.

"They (lemon flavoured pieces) were definately moving. I just posted the video to the Lipton page. I really hope that the Lipton tea we buy in Australia is made here," said Chana Levy in response to Lipton's video.
