Conservative brotherhood has PM's ear: Greens

A review into a controversial taxpayer-funded program which teaches students about gay and lesbian issues is proof the "conservative brotherhood" still runs the federal government, the Greens say.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has ordered a report on the operation of the Safe Schools program amid growing unrest from some of his backbenchers including outspoken Senator Cory Bernardi.

"Placing the Safe Schools program under revision is a hate-filled decision, that could put young people at risk," Greens MP Adam Bandt told reporters in Canberra on Wednesday.

Overnewton Anglican Community College in Melbourne has been using the anti-bullying program since 2013 and principal Jim Laussen rejects claims the program indoctrinates children.

"Senator Bernardi is ill-informed if that's what he thinks the program is about," he told ABC radio.

The program promoted acceptance and a safe environment.

Liberal senator Eric Abetz argued the program was propaganda masquerading as anti-bullying.

"The simple fact is boys are boys, and girls are girls and we should celebrate that," he told reporters.

Children who struggled with gender identification should be offered support, but that shouldn't lead to taxpayer funds being used to teach children that it was OK for boys to use girls' toilets, he said.
